Corn Makes Cars Go?

Apparently I missed the boat on this scene. The use of corn in producing ethanol (known as a form of biofuel) is not only controversial, but quite possibly unnecessary. This interview with the former CIA director answers a few questions about corn-based ethanol.
Yet it also raises even more questions, namely why the U.S. government provides subsidies to American corn farmers to overproduce their crop when farmers in developing countries cannot sell their product due to oversaturation in the global market?

No jokes; this stuff is fascinating, because it's unbelievably true.
